coprime: two game-obsessed, winning-obsessed nerds (ships that I ship)
Wednesday, June 14th, 2017 05:00 pm
Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: John Egbert/Karkat Vantas
Canon Level: One-Sided Crush

There is just something super adorable that happens when you combine Karkat's eternal rage with John's complete inability to take Karkat's bluster seriously. Karkat could use some of John's goofiness in his life helping him to chill out a bit, and I think John would find Karkat and his all his differences endlessly fascinating.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: John Egbert/Dave Strider
Canon level: Friends

Aww, teenagers in love. John is such a doofus, but a good-hearted one who just wants his friends to be happy, that it's hard not to be drawn in. And while John doesn't quite see through Dave's cook kid facade to his squishy underbelly, he also isn't intimidated or put off by said facade and is pretty good at discombobulating Dave with his earnest playfulness. So the end result of Dave and John together is pretty hilarious to read while also being awkward and sweet.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Rose Lalonde/Kanaya Maryam
Canon Level: Dating

Ah, Rose and Kanaya are so much fun to read. They're both so...poised all the time with a subtle wit and (in Rose's case) snark, it's a delight to watch them play off each other, and the art of their conversation is very enjoyable for me. And it's so cute when one (or both) of them gets flustered enough to loose that collected poise they're so well known for.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Sollux Captor/Dave Strider/Karkat Vantas
Canon Level: Friends and Friends-Adjacent

I have already gone into how I like all three sub-pairings that make up this triad. They'd be a mess because they'd have trouble making a stable base for a relationship between just two of them, but it's be a really interesting mess. And while I think they could find a way to make it all work, it wouldn't be without a lot of someone (probably all of them) getting pissed off and shifting priorities and uncertainties about where they're all going.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Sollux Captor/Terezi Pyrope
Canon Level: They Have Mutual Friends

So another thing unique to Homestuck that I have not gotten into up until now is types of shipping. Homestuck canon has three different alien races, each with their own version of what passes for romance for their species, plus some aliens where what they do for romance isn't explored at all. Leprechaun and cherub romance is mostly ignored by the fandom, but troll romance has been embraced. Which is to say that while I have happily shipped the previous pairs regardless of the quadrant or even whether they have a troll-style romance, Sollux and Terezi I pretty much exclusively ship pale, a.k.a. in the bromance quadrant. Sollux and Terezi are characters with a lot of sharp edges, both figuratively and literally, but I don't see their personalities as being such that they end up cutting each other with those edges. Theirs would not be an extremely cuddly and fluffy moirallegiance because Terezi is not one to couch things in gentler terms. She sees the problem and sweeps everyone along in her solution, whether they want to do what's best for themselves or not. And I think Sollux needs someone like that, who can call him on his bull without being cruel about it and who can do what needs to be done even when that's the hard choice.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Sollux Captor/Dave Strider
Canon Level: I Think They've Met

So I feel like there's something I should have explained about Homestuck back on the first day, and it's that pretty much all the characters in Homestuck are assholes. They're all assholes in different ways, and the majority of them are actually extremely likable and/or relatable. But it makes for a change when I try to say why I like a certain pairing because the majority of stuff up until now has been fairly sweet and fluffy. And now it's "I enjoy reading about these two insulting each other." Sollux and Dave aren't quite that bad. I think they'd be fairly chill with each other and tease but not have things escalate into outright arguments. Both Dave and Sollux think they are way smoother than they actually are. They could play video games while Dave rambles and Sollux half pays attention. It'd be cute!

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Mituna Captor/Latula Pyrope
Canon Level: Dating

Mituna and Latula definitely have one of the more stable relationships in canon. They work really well together, having fun and supporting each other and figuring things out together. It's hard not to root for them when reading how into each other they are.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Sollux Captor/Karkat Vantas
Canon Level: Friends

Karkat and Sollux are fun because, despite how they actually are pretty good friends, they spend most of their conversations arguing and insulting each other and themselves. Karkat mostly converse in arguments anyways, and Sollux (generally) enjoys egging him on. It makes for enjoyable fic to read and makes the moments where they put aside the bull even sweeter. Because Karkat does care greatly for Sollux underneath everything, and I think Sollux would help keep Karkat from burying himself in self-hate. They'd probably do it by having an argument about whose life is shittier, but if they're vehemently arguing then no one's wallowing. And if they ever manage to be emotionally honest at the same time, they can bond over their horrible futures waiting for them as adults.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Sollux Captor/Aradia Megido
Canon Level: Used to Date

I both love and hate this pairing because they are the worst combination of utterly adorkable and completely tragic. I just want Aradia teasing Sollux to get him out of his house and caring for him when he gets moody and Sollux finding Aradia's jokes charming and getting caught up in her enthusiasm for dead things despite himself. That's all I want, and yet. Then there's canon where spoilers. ) I just want to know what happened to them!

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: Dave Strider/Karkat Vantas
Canon Level: Dating

There are a lot of ships I like that can ace the broccoli test, and then there are the ones that couldn't pass it if you gave them poster board, a dozen sharpies, and an hour to prepare. Dave and Karkat are the latter sort, mostly because I think Dave would get a lot of amusement out of trolling Karkat by deliberately not getting it. They're two of the chattiest characters in Homestuck, and yet getting them to have a straight-forward talk about their feelings is virtually impossible. They're the pairing that dragged me into this fandom kicking and screaming and trying to figure out this quadrant thing because they're just that much fun to read about. Karkat's bossy, loud, and a secret sap once you sift through all the extraneous b.s. he spouts. Dave has never met a metaphor he couldn't torture to death, especially if he could use it to avoid talking about anything real, but underneath his bluster he's a normal kid who's afraid to show people his vulnerable spots. And they seem to get each other, which allows them to relax a bit and not be so determined to keep everyone at arm's length.

I have finally read all of Homestuck that there is to read. It took me like a year to do, and I feel like I should get a merit badge for this accomplishment.

...That's all. (Okay, I do have a lot more thoughts about Homestuck, but that's all for now.)
