coprime: two game-obsessed, winning-obsessed nerds (ships that I ship)

Canon: Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Pairing: Varrick/Zhu Li Moon
Canon Level: Married

Hah, I didn't even know I shipped Varrick and Zhu Li until Varrick asked her to do the thing forever and my reaction was "Yessss!" It snuck up on me! Much like Varrick's redemption arc in general. But, aww, Varrick does appreciate Zhu Li and everything she is to him. And they make a nigh-unbeatable team when they're on the same page.

Canon: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Pairing: Sokka/Yue
Canon Level: Interested In Each Other

Sokka and Yue are a whirlwind romance that never had a chance. Sokka was enthralled by this beautiful princess and Yue was enamored of young man who could make her laugh, and then it all ended tragically. As much as I like Sokka and Suki (And I do, a lot.), I think Sokka and Yue had just as much potential. I don't think Sokka will ever forget Yue, and I think Yue would watch over Sokka as much as she's able in her position.

Canon: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Pairing: Sokka/Suki
Canon Level: Dating

My favorite character and her nearly as awesome canon love interest? Yes, please! Mere words cannot accurately describe how much I adore Suki. She's a fighter, she's a leader, she's dependable, she's able to laugh and not take everything too seriously. Sokka suffers in comparison because he's not Suki (a failing shared by nearly all of the characters), but he's great too. He's a weird mix of being the strategist of the group as well as the comedian, but neither role ever feels forced or unnatural on him. So together they're really great too, with both of them growing into the best version of themselves they can be with the other person by their side the entire way. I also like to think Suki is continually amused by Sokka, when he's joking and when he's taking things more seriously than he needs to, and I do think Sokka needs someone like that.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

1) Eternal Friends by [fanfiction.net profile] simounsibylla is an Aria fanfic featuring Alicia/Akira. Aria is an anime/manga in the slice of life genre where the characters appreciate the beauty and simplicity of everyday life, but this one is set on a future version of Mars that's been colonized, terraformed, and is now mostly covered by water and the characters are all Undines (gondoliers). It's a gentle and optimistic series, and "Eternal Friends" captures that feel perfectly. It's lovely to see Alicia and Akira, two of the secondary characters, given a chance to shine with the glimpses of their past together and also looking forward towards their future. I really don't know what else to say except that I think this could fit into the canon beautifully.

2) Put away childish things by [livejournal.com profile] sophiap is an Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic looking at Monk Gyatso after Aang ran away. It's sad, but it's perfect in its own way. Gyatso doesn't get a lot of fanfic written about him, but the few things I've found have all been brilliant. "Put away childish things" even has some worldbuilding to make it feel like, yes, this is exactly how Gyatso dealt with his grief and how could it be any thing else.

3)
Tape Madness by [archiveofourown.org profile] jmtorres is a Sector General fanfic starring Dr. Conway. who is having a problem with one of the tapes in his head. Sector General is a science fiction series by James White set on a huge, interspecies hospital/space station. All the alien species White came up with are imaginative and different, so the way canon works around having different species operate on each other is via tape technology. A tape is basically a psychic impression of a person's mind which is then overlaid onto another person's mind. The tape contains all the knowledge of the original person (hence letting vastly different species understand each other's anatomy), but it also contains all the instincts, drives, preferences, etc. of the original person. So there are pretty much always conflicts between a person's own needs and what the tape is telling them they need, like carnivore vs. herbivore or oxygen-breather vs. nitrogen-breather. I hope that explanation made sense because "Tape Madness" is a brilliant bit of fanfic dealing with one possible problem from a tape that has an even more brilliant ending. It is, if fact, the only fannish thing I have ever found for this canon, and I wish more people were familiar with Sector General because "Tape Madness" is just plain old fun.

Bonus)
Did you ever wonder, if there were people like you? by [archiveofourown.org profile] Qem is a super short crossover between Azumanga Daioh and Hikaru no Go. It's a perfect little morsel of a fic, especially the last sentence, but I think that a passing familiarity with both canons is required to enjoy it.

Ahhh, we keep coming thisclose to winning and then failing to. So far this series whoever has more shots on goal is the one that loses, and Nashville is beating us 3-1. I wasn't really expecting the Wings to have a serious run for the cup, but I was hoping we could at least advance to Round 2. (We still could! It will be tough though.) We are kind of worn down as a team though, poor Cleary and Helm. I did really like how the crowd at Joe Louis Arena booed Weber every time he had the puck.

I think I need to try my hand at icon making once more, given how much I keep talking about hockey. Probably of Filppula, who I sort of randomly decided was my favorite. He's a good, solid player for the most part and probably the most attractive player on the team. This is not saying much, I know, given the average attractiveness of hockey players.

The Tigers are doing pretty good, which is nice, I suppose. I mean, if I can only have one sports team win a night, I'd prefer it to be the Red Wings since they're in the playoffs now and the Tiger's regular season is just starting. But I will take my wins where I can get them, haha. And Austin Jackson, my favorite on the Tigers, is doing much better at batting this year. Which makes me happy because he was really...not that great at batting last year.

And in much more squeeful fandom news, I finally got to watch the first episode of The Legend of Korra, and it was the bestest! So amazing! I want to watch the rest right now because everyone and everything in it is awesome.

I participated in a 5K run/walk (I walked) last Sunday. It was fun! Even despite the rain in the morning before the race. My dad, brother D, and his wife all walked too, so it was nice to see them. My ankles were so sore the next day though; I am out of shape.

Oh, man. How did I *not* realize that Nick had finally started showing new episodes of Avatar. I'm catching the first new episode on Nick2, and it is all I could have hoped for.

Spoilers~ )

Man, Avatar: The Last Airbender is easily, in my opinion, the best cartoon being shown currently on American tv. The characters really do act like they're twelve, fourteen, fifteen, or sixteen. There's plot and continuity, but the episodes also stand on their own. Except after watching the entire season in order, there's so much more you can catch.

I stayed away from the show for a long time because Nickelodeon does not, in general, produce programming I want to watch. But [livejournal.com profile] glenraven kept poking me until I finally watched it. And it was fantastic! But it came on when I worked, so I only saw a handful of episodes. Until Nickelodeon had a marathon of every episode aired, which I taped for the purpose of showing my roommate. And yes!

We have the season finale on right now, and I love it. Zuko is--! And Sokka, who is such a fifteen-year-old boy with a crush. And Katara's gotten so strong.

...I post now because anything else I'd have to say would be even more incoherent with glee than that last paragraph.
