coprime: two game-obsessed, winning-obsessed nerds (ships that I ship)

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Nina/Rei
Canon Level: Friendly

I promise this is the end of the Nina train I have been on for the past few days. But this entire scene is Nina going, "Look who I brought home, Mom and Dad! He's a weretiger thief who's at least a decade older than me! Isn't he great?" And Rei just goes with it despite not really knowing what exactly he's doing, and I am just like, "Yes, rebel, Nina, rebel! You should be able to go for that tiger man if you want to!" It's almost like fake dating and made me believe Nina and Rei fake dating would be great. It'd start out with Nina wanting to scandalize her parents and Rei wanting to get some respectability for a start at a new life. And then Nina would realize how much of a softie Rei is beneath his fearsome exterior and how much he just wants a family to take care of. Rei would get to know all of Nina's facets and realize that here is someone willing to fight for him because he is deserving of that. Until everything finally came to a head (probably because of Nina's parents confronting them and forcing the issue), and the real truth comes out.

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Momo/Nina
Canon Level: Friends

I think they'd be cute together! Momo is very smart and curious but also a bit spacey at times. I think she'd forget to treat Nina like the princess she is, and I think Nina would enjoy that. Watching Momo experiment could be relaxing for Nina despite the explosions because it would be a place where she doesn't have any duties or responsibilities or politics to take care of. I'm not sure if Momo would understand why Nina finds her lab to be a respite, but she would enjoy the company.

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Nina/Ryu
Canon Level: Interested in Each Other

I will probably ship every version of Nina and Ryu, but right now the only Breath of Fire's I'm familiar with are I and III. And while this is still Nina and Ryu, they're a different Nina and Ryu than the first game. This Nina has more sense and spends a good portion of the game chafing at the restraints put on her by her role as a princess and trying to figure out who she is beyond that role, and this Ryu gets to have his entire life be a big philosophical question on self-determination and what it means to live and exist. Nina is a steadfast friend of Ryu's, standing by and believing in him wholeheartedly since the beginning. But she's also not Ryu's sidekick, as she spends a lot of time also figuring out who she is. I like them because they clearly care for each other and they've both questioned who they are and what their place in the world is. I think post-game, Wyndia could serve as a good home for Ryu. He'd still wander, I think, exploring the world and making new friends and visiting old ones, but Wyndia and Nina would be a good place for him to rest and recoup. And sometimes Nina would go with him! Because even if she's comfortable with herself and her role leading Wyndia, I bet she would still sometimes long for an adventure and go with Ryu to see what sort of trouble they could find.

I got nothing. This is not a series of games that has produced a lot of fannish output in the form of fic.

Hello dear Yuletide Author! Words cannot describe how excited I am that you offered one of my teeny fandoms. I love all these canons, so I'm sure I will love whatever you write me. I'm easy to please, I promise, so what I want most is for you to write a story that you like. If you already know what you want to write, go for it! If, on the other hand, you'd like a bit more diection, read on. (Warning: I got way more rambly this year than I have in past letters. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing yet.)

General Likes/Dislikes )

Breath of Fire III )

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) )

Final Thoughts: Thank you so much for offering to write one of my beloved fandoms, darling author! I know this is a long letter, but what I said in the first paragraph still stands. I am ecstatic at the mere idea of fic for me in one of my four requests, so if you already have an idea, go for it!

[1] A tool-assisted speedrun uses an emulator (and therefore save states and frame-by-frame progression of the game) to create a "perfect" game. I don't know if you're familiar with TASes or what the opinion of them is in the wider gaming community, but I think they'd be pretty decent for canon review. Personally, I find them neat because I find all the manipulation that goes on (lengthening the time between random encounters as much as possible, always getting critical hits, best walking path, etc.) really interesting. They're not a substitute for actually playing a game, but I don't think anyone in the TAS subculture claims it is. (I highly recommend the Super Metroid TASes and explanation about what they're doing as an intro to what TASes can do.)

The Breath of Fire III TAS is long, but the game itself is long. The TAS names Ryu "A" because that's two less letters for the dialogue boxes to print before they can be dismissed. For the most part, I was able to read the dialogue boxes just fine without pausing, but if you're a slower reader than me, you might want to keep the pause button at the ready.

The Phantasy Star IV TAS has no sequence-breaking that I know of, but the dialogue boxes go by very fast. You might want to keep the script open in another window if you watch.
