Ships that I Ship: Day 99: Achilles/Patroclus

Canon: The Iliad
Pairing: Achilles/Patroclus
Canon Level: Together

Achilles and Patroclus are like Baby's First Classical Slash Pairing. (The other choices for the title are either Jonathan and David or Gilgamesh and Enkidu.) I remember reading excerpts of the Iliad in class when I was fourteen and side-eying the translation because I did not buy that this was a strictly platonic relationship between these two. There is an undeniable amount of caring and devotion between Achilles and Patroclus, making their deaths incredibly tragic, but they just seem so happy with each other before that.
