coprime: two game-obsessed, winning-obsessed nerds (ships that I ship)

Canon: Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Pairing: Varrick/Zhu Li Moon
Canon Level: Married

Hah, I didn't even know I shipped Varrick and Zhu Li until Varrick asked her to do the thing forever and my reaction was "Yessss!" It snuck up on me! Much like Varrick's redemption arc in general. But, aww, Varrick does appreciate Zhu Li and everything she is to him. And they make a nigh-unbeatable team when they're on the same page.

Canon: Free!
Pairing: Matsuoka Rin/Nanase Haruka/Tachibana Makoto
Canon Level: Friends

So here's the thing about this trio in my eyes. Makoto and Haru get each other in a way no one else does because they've known each other for forever. They can find understanding and stability in each other, but the things that make their relationship so important to them also make it difficult for them to change their relationship. Rin, on the other hand, inspires large emotions in Haru and has for as long as they've known each other even when they weren't in contact with each other. I think Haru is drawn to Rin's energy and Rin is drawn to Haru's single-minded passion, so it's easy to see how something could develop between them. But I also think that they'd have trouble finding a workable balance to make something long-term actually work. So if you combine Rin and Haru and Makoto, you actually get something that might work surprisingly well. Rin brings energy and a refusal to let either Makoto or Haru get stuck in a rut, Makoto brings levelheadedness and a calming influence for Rin and for Haru, and Haru brings the determination to wholeheartedly commit to both Makoto and Rin and have their relationship work.

Canon: Homestuck
Pairing: John Egbert/Dave Strider
Canon level: Friends

Aww, teenagers in love. John is such a doofus, but a good-hearted one who just wants his friends to be happy, that it's hard not to be drawn in. And while John doesn't quite see through Dave's cook kid facade to his squishy underbelly, he also isn't intimidated or put off by said facade and is pretty good at discombobulating Dave with his earnest playfulness. So the end result of Dave and John together is pretty hilarious to read while also being awkward and sweet.

Canon: Guardians of the Galaxy
Pairing: Kraglin Obfonteri/YOndu Udonta
Canon Level: Boss/Subordinate

So I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, went looking to see what was out there, and promptly fell into the Yondu/Kraglin hole. They're both amoral assholes without an ounce of manners between them, which is what makes them fun to read about. And there are so many different tacks to take! Early relationship where it's something casual and there's no good way to change that because that would mean talking about it. Established relationship where they know what they are to each other but can't or won't acknowledge it. Trying to manage a ship-full of unruly pirates, a relationship, and a small child who you are now sort of raising.

Canon: Wreck-It Ralph
Pairing: Tamora Calhoun/Fix-It Felix
Canon Level: Married

Aww, Felix and Calhoun. Disney does not have to do a lot of work to get me to ship something, I must admit, but these two really are sweet together. Felix looks at Calhoun like she's amazing, and Felix is so upbeat and positive that Calhoun can't help but melt her tough exterior just a little bit for him, which probably makes him amazing in her eyes. They do a good job of balancing each other, despite being so different from each other.

Canon: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: Rodney McKay/Radek Zelenka
Canon Level: Colleagues

The thing that makes Radek and Rodney so fun together is that Radek is one of the few people who can actually understand Rodney on a technical level. And he's not afraid to stand up to Rodney. McKay's brilliant, but I feel like someone challenging him in the areas of his expertise for reasons of scientific discovery can only lead to good things. And I think Radek would also enjoy the challenge of working with Rodney and after they solve whatever problem they were working on, they can relax and commiserate together.

Canon: Pointsman series
Pairing: Philip Eslingen/Nicolas Rathe
Canon Level: Essentially Married

I've only read book two in the series, Point of Dreams, but it was such a delightful read that I'm willing to wholeheartedly recommend the entire series. The world building's fun, but mostly Nico and Philip are just plain enjoyable. They have different lives, but they're both smart and want to have this thing between them work despite the fact that it makes other aspects of their lives difficult. They care for each other, and I find a lot of joy in the way they express that.

Canon: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Pairing: Flint Lockwood/Sam Sparks
Canon Level: Dating

They're so cute together! They're both giant nerds, and they are giant nerds who support each other in their nerdery. And while I am all for people being enthusiastically into something and enthusiastically into each other, the initial reason Flint and Sam stole my heart was because of the makeover scene. The one where the nerdy girls lets her hair loose and puts in some contacts and wears some makeup and now all of a sudden she's super attractive? Yeah, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs does that scene except Sam puts pulls her hair into a high ponytail with a scrunchie and puts on big, square glasses and Flint is just in awe at her new look. My heart melted, and I think that scene is one of the most romantic scenes I have ever seen because the ponytail and glasses is who Sam was before she changed herself in order to stop getting picked on, and that is the version of Sam that Flint falls head over heels for. I would like Flint and Sam even without that scene because nerds dating is great, but they probably wouldn't make me draw little mental hearts in the air at the thought of them together were it not for that one particular scene.

Canon: The Book of Life
Pairing: Joaquín Mondragón/María Posada/Manolo Sánchez
Canon Level: Two Are Married And The Third Is A Good Friend

Joaquín, María, and Manolo are another clear case where the answer to the love triangle should be an OT3. They're all good friends, and it makes me sad that the movie ends with Manolo and María marrying and Joaquín all alone. Yes, he still has his friends, but his love for María seemed just as genuine as Manolo's to me and now he has to watch his best friend marry the woman he loves, who is also his other best friend. The three of them seem like they have so much fun together that I can't imagine any of them would be able to stand them not being on equal footings for long.

Canon: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: Evan Lorne/Radek Zelenka
Canon Level: They've Probably Talked To Each Other At Some Point Or Another

I think this one has even less canon support than Lorne/Parrish, although at least both Lorne and Radek get a decent amount of (separate) screen time over the course of the series. Lorne and Zelenka play similar roles in the show, in that they're both the right hand man of man in charge of the military/science contingent. Lorne works in the background to help Sheppard by being steady and competent; Zelenka works in the background to help McKay by being sensible and confronting McKay when necessary. Their similar positions on Atlantis probably give them a similar viewpoint of life on Atlantis, and they can bond over what it's like to work for Sheppard and McKay. Neither has a very flashy personality, but that would probably make for a refreshing change after all the excitement that makes up the rest of their lives.

Canon: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: Evan Lorne/Parrish
Canon Level: They've Talked To Each Other

Fandom took about two minutes of onscreen interaction between these two and ran with it, creating a relatively popular pairing. And I am absolutely willing to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed SGA fandom's overactive imagination in this case. Lorne is a generally likable minor character; he's the guy in the background competently getting stuff done without a lot of fanfare and with a sense of humor. And the two minutes of interaction managed to include banter, excited geeking out, some interested questions about the source of geeking out, and mild protectiveness. Ramp up the interest and protectiveness, and you've basically got all the elements you need for a decent, cute romance fic.

Canon: Nightrunner
Pairing: Alec/Seregil
Canon Level: Essentially Married

The Nightrunner books themselves are simply delightful. Seregil and Alec are thieves and spies and lovers, and they really are so much to read about together. They go on adventures and care for one another, and fic is great because it can focus on the latter care while the books generally focus on the former adventures.

Canon: Firefly
Pairing: Wash Washburne/Zoe Washburne
Canon Level: Married

Some Wash/Zoe came across my Pinboard network today, so I read it and was thoroughly charmed because Wash and Zoe will always charm me. (Unless it is post-Serenity, but I read that a lot less often.) Wash/Zoe is probably the closest I come to an actual OTP that aligns with how most of fandom uses that term. Like, at least 85% of Firefly is them-centric. (The remaining 15% is mostly gen and crossovers with a smidgen for other pairings that look intriguing.) And they're one of the very few pairings where I am incapable of reading about them with anyone else. They're just so perfect for each other! Sweet and silly and incredibly in love. Zoe is almost a different person with Wash, able to open herself up and unafraid to show him her softer side because Wash isn't afraid of her strength, nor does he feel the need to go around posturing or challenging her. It's all very cute and romantic, the way they interact with each other.

Canon: DC Comics
Pairing: Booster Gold/Ted Kord
Canon Level: Best Friends

Booster and Ted are fantastic together. Best friends who bicker while getting into or out of situations that can often be described as hijinks. They're the pair who argue over every little thing, but they still play off each other and work together like a well-oiled machine, causing wacky chaos in their wake. There is a fic where Booster and Ted essentially double dog dare themselves into having sex, and only with these two does that seem like a perfectly plausible way for them to have a first time, which I feel also pretty neatly sums up why I like them.

Canon Level: Dating

Ah, Rose and Kanaya are so much fun to read. They're both so...poised all the time with a subtle wit and (in Rose's case) snark, it's a delight to watch them play off each other, and the art of their conversation is very enjoyable for me. And it's so cute when one (or both) of them gets flustered enough to loose that collected poise they're so well known for.

Canon: Nero Wolfe
Pairing: Fritz Brenner/Saul Panzer
Canon Level: They Know Each Other and Have No Ill Will Towards Each Other

As much as I love Archie/Wolfe, I will stand by my belief that Saul and Fritz are perfect for each even if I am standing all by my lonesome. Both Fritz and Saul are on the periphery of Archie's stories, an essential piece but never the focus. I think that suits them well because neither would want the spotlight if offered. They're not flashy like Archie or dramatic like Wolfe; they're both masters at their skill sets, but they prefer to get on with things without calling attention to themselves. They're wonderfully suited for each other because their way of approaching their lives is so very similar, for all that cooking and detecting are two very different skill sets. Fritz is already used to the detective lifestyle and the danger inherent in it, so that wouldn't be as much of a deterrent as it might be for others. They already respect each other, and I just feel like they have to have some sort of relationship that we never get to see because the stories are told by Archie and Archie isn't involved in whatever is between them. But they've been in the same social circle for too long for me to not believe that they understand each other and are friends.

Canon: The Mighty Orinoco
Pairing: Jacques/Jeanne
Canon Level: Married

I am ridiculously into this book and couple, and I am sadly the only one. Not that I am surprised by this. The Mighty Orinoco is about a group of people traveling together to find the source of the Orinoco River, each for their own reasons. Jeanne, the lady in my default icon, disguised herself as a boy so she could go search for her missing father. While on the trip, she strikes up a friendship with Jacques, leaving him much confused until he rescues after she falls overboard and figures some things out. Jeanne is courageous and strong-willed, so it's no wonder Jacques falls head over heels for her. And it turns out I am completely weak against characters who are very confused about their feelings, most notably Jacques and his friendship with Jean/Jeanne and I do not think finding out Jeanne's gender would have made him any less confused. Verne doesn't really dwell on that aspect, but I am perfectly happy to read between the lines.

Canon: Hikaru no Go
Pairing: Touya Akira/Waya Yoshitaka
Canon Level: They Have Mutual Friends In Common

So the thing about Waya and Touya is that it's easy to see why they don't get along. Touya comes across as stuck-up to Waya, and Waya's far to loud for Touya. But they also have Hikaru in common, and if they are able to bond over anything, it will certainly be Hikaru and his weird, weird ways. And if they can bond over one thing, maybe they can see eye-to-eye on other things too. I think if they got to a point where their different personalities didn't rub each other the wrong way (through long proximity via Hikaru or just the magic of growing up some), then they'd enjoy arguing back and forth and sharpening their wits against each other.

Canon: Gundam Wing
Pairing: Trowa Barton/Quatre Raberba Winner
Canon Level: Colleagues

Quatre/Trowa is a classic that I will stand by. The pairing has a sad tendency to be found in the background a lot but rarely does it get to be the forefront. Neither Quatre or Trowa are as flashy as some of the other characters, but that's what makes them work. Trowa hides his emotions, so he needs someone with the patience to outlast his natural reserve. And Quatre hides behind politeness, so he needs someone who will take the time to observe him and learn who he really is. Together, they would have a subtle but deeply felt romance.
