Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 4
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.
1) Recs for reccers! I've subscribed to a bunch of reccers on DW and friended a bunch on LJ, but I'd love to follow more.
2) I've been on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kick recently because there's a new show and I will never not love the ninja turtles, so if anyone knew of good stories, arts, communities, or whatever turtles-related, I would be ecstatic to know about them too. My only caveat is that I'm not really into turtlecest or anything involving turtle penises. (I am totally fine with other people enjoying those things, but they are not my bag.)
3) Video game recs! I am finally getting into playing video games after years of thinking they were just not for me, and I would love some titles that you think I could play. I have access to a lot of systems (Nintendo DS, NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Playstation 2, XBox, Game Boy, Game Boy Advanced, probably others too), but I'm really bad at things that require fast reflexes (platformers, most modern RPGs) and have no patience for things that punish death severely (e.g., NetHack). Some games that have worked for me were Katamari Damacy, Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, and Scribblenauts. The Professor Layton games are on my "to get" list, but I don't know what else I should put on it.
Bonus) Not exactly fannish, but I'd love any delicious dessert or snack recipes that you know of. I like to collect recipes, and when I'm called on to make something (for a party or because I want to) I just browse until I find the perfect thing to make. I'm reasonably competent in the kitchen but lack the patience for anything super involved. And for anyone reading, this peanut butter fudge is both incredibly delicious and incredibly easy to make.

This review gives a good run-down of the game.

I flat-out hate things that punish you with death, and am much happier with sort of falling over and trying again. Also, I tend to get all over-stimulated and wibbly if I have to try to go too fast or flex or hit things too quickly. So! My classic loves are the Donkey Kong Country series for SNES, because there's just a lot of falling over then getting up, and a pirate ship. I also really like Psychonauts for the PS2, and Lego Pirates of the Carribean. I'd love to know if any of those work out for you.
Happy gaming!

And Donkey Kong! I think I actually own this one already; I will have to dig it out and try playing it. Psychonauts definitely looks interesting. Is it easy to walk off the edge of the world in Psychonauts or are there invisible walls stopping you? I tried Super Mario 64 once, and Mario walked off a lot of cliffs in that game. The Lego game looks really cute (all the little Lego people running around! with their little Lego legs and hands!). Thank you for the recommendations. :)

Yeah, that's my worry. I'm super-bad at platformers because I've yet to meet a cliff or pit that I didn't enthusiastically accidentally jump into about twenty times. It looks so shiny though.

These shortbread cookies are super easy to make (uh, if you have a stand mixer or VERY STRONG ARMS) and delicious. The rice flour gives them a great sandy texture:
Scottish Shortbread
1 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup confectioner's sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
2 cups all purpose or pastry flour
1/2 cup rice flour or fine semolina
1/4 teaspoon salt
Beat butter until soft. Add sugar and extract. Beat until smooth. Stir salt into flours and mix well, then add flour and salt mixture to first mixture and beat until the dough forms a big ball.
Press dough evenly into a round cake pan. Score into wedges (or petticoat tails) with a fork. Do not poke straight through the dough - score only 3/4 way through. Decorate lightly with patterns and frills if desired.
Or you can divide the dough in half and just form them into flat circles or squares about, I dunno, half an inch tall? on a baking sheet, and score them into wedges or fingers.
Bake in 375-degree oven 25 minutes, or just until the edges are golden brown. Cut along markings with a butter knife while still hot. Cool in pan, then turn out and sprinkle with a light dusting of confectioner's sugar if serving right away, or store in an airtight tin.

You also have access to a lot of the same game platforms that I do! I write reviews of the games I play, and I'm not big on severely dying, either, if you want to check those out.
If you like Katamari Damacy, you might like Chibi Robo, which is similarly cracktastic, but more of a task-oriented, collecting game. It's for the Nintendo GameCube. On Nintendo DS, I liked Ghost Trick, and Miles Edgeworth (which is part of the Phoenix Wright series). The Lego games are always fun and available on, like, every platform ever, and come in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter -- lots of popular flavors -- and are extremely forgiving if you mess up or briefly die.

That shortbread recipe looks really interesting; I've never used rice flour before. Is it really that different from regular flour? (I made a shortbread once using half-white/half-wheat flour that was fantastic, much less heavy-feeling than other shortbreads I've made that just use white flour.)
Thank you so much for those game reviews! They are very helpful. You write in a way that makes it easy for me to judge the game on how much I'd like it but that is still fun to read. Your 999 review honestly made me laugh out loud.
Chibi Robo sounds so adorable. I unfortunately don't have access to a GameCube, but Wikipedia says there's a sequel for the DS that I can check out. Ghost Trick also looks like it could be really interesting to play.

Rice flour doesn't have gluten in it like wheat flour, so it changes how the cookie rises. I think it gives it more lift? Since the gluten isn't pulling it in with its elastic strands? I read what it does somewhere but I can't find it again. Mostly it changes the texture, makes it more crumbly, which is why fine semolina or corn meal will also do the job.
I'm really glad you enjoyed my game reviews! Ghost Trick is a great game, it doesn't require platformer reflexes, and you can play the same part over and over until you get it, so if you fail (you're already dead), it's not a huge deal. And Chibi Robo for the DS! I didn't know about that. IGN.com says it's okay, which is enough to get me to buy it.
