Catching Up On Stuff I've Watched Recently
-I finally finished Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood! It took several years, but I did it! And I dunno. The ending underwhelmed me? Possibly part of that is my fault, since I took a break with just two episodes left, thinking there was more action left and it turned out there wasn't really. So the end felt anti-climactic in a way that it probably wouldn't have if I hadn't broken it up. I honestly am not sure which series I like better, the first one or Brotherhood.
I think Brotherhood makes more sense, comes full circle more and wraps things up better. But it also dragged a lot for me. It took me forever to watch the first ten or so episodes since they mostly just seemed like a re-hash of the first series. And I got stuck not watching for a very long time when Ed went to Briggs as well because it just didn't grab my interest. Whereas the first series I don't remember having that issue.
Sigh, it is probably nostalgia goggles that makes me more fond of the first series. Brotherhood is also not related to Conqueror of Shamballa, which can only be a good thing because that movie was horrible, and killed Shou Tucker, so those are also both points in Brotherhood's favor.
I actually did like the end with Ed giving up his alchemy to get Al's body back. It felt fitting and showed a lot of character growth on Ed's part. I...am not sure how I feel about the Ed/Winry part of the ending? I like post-canon Ed/Roy, so that's possibly part of it, but I think part of why I like post-canon Ed/Roy is because the show never sold me on the Ed/Winry? Like were they even dating when Ed proposed? Did I miss something because I just didn't care enough to pay more attention? But it just didn't work for me--Ed and Al go off to explore the world and learn more about alchemy, and Ed gets married to Winry and has kids are two incompatible endings to me. I can see either, but I can't see both because Ed going off to research alchemy sounds too much like what Van Hohenheim did to Trisha and Ed and Al, and I'm uncomfortable with an Ed who doesn't see the similarities. It's not exactly the same, but it's not entirely different either.
I do wish there were more post-canon fics that deal with Ed not being able to do alchemy anymore.
-Husband and I watched the Steven Universe one-hour special that came out earlier this week, and was that the series finale? It felt like one--the Diamonds are on the same side as the Crystal Gems now, Homeworld is no longer a threat, the corrupted gems have been healed. Everything's been wrapped up, it seems like. There's certainly more where the show could go--how does Homeworld change now that the Diamonds aren't bent on conquest, what happens to all the planets Yellow Diamond conquered, do the now-uncorrupted gems stay on Earth or go back to Homeworld, how do the citizens of Beach City get along with all these new gems--but the series feels finished to me now.
There's apparently a movie coming out in Fall 2019 with potentially a new antagonist? So we'll see, I guess.
-I binged the newest season of Miraculous Ladybug on Netflix in two days, and oh man this show is my jam. Please keep the Adrien/Marinette shenanigans coming, and the Alya/Nino bits were adorable as well. I also really liked Chloe's gradual redemption arc and how she's been learning to be a (slightly) better person.
-Land of the Lustrous was exactly what I've been wanting to watch recently--short, pretty, interesting. I could have done with fewer booty shorts on everyone, but it didn't stop me from enjoying everything else. I really hope a second season gets made at some point.
Now I need to figure out what to watch next. Possible contenders:
-the last three seasons of Voltron: Legendary Defender
-the new season of Trolls
-Dragon Pilot
-Dragon Prince
-Little Witch Academia
-She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
-Cells at Work!
-Hunter x Hunter
-Mobile Fighter G Gundam
-The Ancient Magus' Bride
-No. 6
-Samurai Flamenco
-one of the other over two dozen shows on my Netflix, CrunchyRoll, or Amazon to watch list???
I am leaning towards G Gundam because it is completely ridiculous and I never finished it the first time round, but everything else also looks tempting....
