Movies I Have Seen: Ralph Breaks the Internet
Hah, I think Ralph Breaks the Internet is the...third? maybe? movie I have seen in theaters this year. I saw Pom Poko with a friend, which was a trip, and Mary and the Witch's Flower with the same friend. Maybe we saw one other film together? Either way, my not-seeing-films-in-theaters-regularly has kept an important piece of information from me: my preferred movie theater, in addition to the seats being reclining La-Z-Boy loveseats, has heated seats. It was glorious.
Anywho, my thoughts on Ralph, in no particular order:
*It keeps throwing me that the title for the movie is Ralph Breaks the Internet, not Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet. Like, it feels not right to not explicitly call back to the first movie in the title, but I am also 100% sure this is a me issue and not an actual issue.
*The scene with the Disney princesses played much better than I thought it would, given the previews! It seemed awkward and done for the laughs in the previews but worked fairly naturally in the movie.
*Although, now that I think about it, I had some issues because I have strong opinions about Disney princesses. SO, the preview has all the princesses asking what makes Vanellope a princess and her asking if they need the police. The scene then continues with the princesses deciding Vanellope does count as a real princess because Vanellope agrees when they ask her if everyone thinks all her problems are solved now that a big, strong man has saved her. And I am just confused? I don't recall anyone in the first Ralph acting like that and no one in the second does either, so what is she referring to? Did I miss something?
*Also, I take issue with the idea that people's characterizations of the princesses is that all their problems are solved when a big, strong man saved them. Like, I would not describe most of the Disney princes as "big, strong men." Gaston is what I think of with that description and it just doesn't fit, say, Aladdin? And Mulan and Merida's movies are the opposite of being rescued by a big, strong man. (I'll cop to Shang being a big, strong man though.) Elsa doesn't have a man period, unless you have her share Kristoff (who is big and strong, yes) with Anna, but that seems weird.
*...I'm overthinking it, I know, but I like all the Disney princesses and dislike seeing all their stories get reduced to the most boring stereotype.
*Anyway, I did really enjoy the movie despite mostly complaining about it so far! Thoroughly enjoyable! The plot felt a bit...weak but thinking about it afterwards, I believe this was because there wasn't any sort of traditional villain. There's no real bad guy antagonist.
*Alan Tudyk continues to be a voice wizard who is in a ton of things I have seen and yet I can never identify him.
*I left the theater really wanting more. How did Felix and Calhoun manage parenting the other Sugar Rush racers during the first movie? Does Vanellope show up as a super-secret unlockable character in Slaughter Race? What;s Sugar Rush like without her, can players still choose her as a racer? Does Ralph continue on as a meme in the internet even if he's no longer making videos? How does Vanellope adjust to being in a game that's always on with almost no breaks?
*I do wish there were more video game callbacks and references, rather than all the internet references we get instead, but this is very much a movie about the internet rather than a movie about video games.
*Favorite bit was the after credits scene, which made me laugh out loud.
I also finally saw Black Panther recently! It was also very good! I don't really have any thoughts about other than it was neat and I'd like to watch more movies like it.
