Animal Crossing Blatherings
The new update trailer just got released and I have too many thoughts, aaaahh.
My simplest thought is I am excited for the new hairstyles because I know a lot of people have been wanting them, although I myself will not use them. The afro puffs are adorable though.
The new reactions are neat but also not the thing I am most excited about? Being able to sit down next to my villagers will be awesome because my house's backyard is apparently the hot spot on town, although I saw someone point out that you know your villagers are just going to stand up again as soon as you sit next to them because that's what they already do now when you sit by them. And it is totally true. The other reactions are cute, but I don't know how much I'll use them. You can only fit eight on the favorite ring, and I am so slow at navigating the big list. I expect I'll continue to use "greetings" as both hello and goodbye just to save space. I currently use "delight," "greetings," and "joy" (and occasionally "glee") for all my emotes and it serves me well online. I am disappointed that you just...buy the new reactions rather than learn them somehow over time. It'd be nice to have more general reactions for my villagers to teach me. On the other hand, if they were personality locked, I'd have to go find a lazy villager to get the reactions. So maybe it is better that I can buy them outright.
I am super looking forward to expanded storage space because I am a clothes horse and regularly have to make room for new things. So that'll be great. I believe I saw on the website you have to pay off your last home loan in order to get the new increased storage space, but I did that ages ago. I am curious how much the new storage space will cost. And I'd really like if we could increase the size of our side rooms, but that does not seem to be.
Other things hiding on the website include being able to visit a random dream address with Luna (so no outside apps needed any more), and it looks like you'll be able to see your catalogue in the Nintendo Switch Online app? This is apparently from the Japanese update, so maybe something has been lost in translation. We shall see! Oh, and the island transfer system will finally be in place, plus you can transfer just a resident rather than the whole island. So that seems super useful for people who are not me.
It also seems there will be new special items in the Resident Services Kiosk. The two solstice items from before will return (the summer solstice crown and winter solstice sweater) with the addition of a super cute sunflower-shaped summer solstice rug and a super pretty northern lights winter solstice wallpaper. If I recall from the summer, you can only get the items for your season unless you trade with someone in the other hemisphere. I will be sad to miss out on the rug for six months, it really is so pretty. There's also a screenshot on the Japanese page of you celebrating New Year's with your friends that has several food items plus some apple cider champagne, and those all seem to be items from previous games (I think I read that they are in previous games) that you'll buy from the special section of the Kiosk.
Also from the Kiosk it seems will be a Pocket Camp phone customization. I don't really care out the phone case, but maybe there'll be more Pocket Camp items or maybe there'll be more special phone customizations. That would be cool. And it seems the update will mail you a yule log cake when you update, so that's nice. I'm curious if we'll be able to reorder the yule log cake like we can the ring-con or if it'll be a special item like Jack's portrait and Luna's bed.
Here is my prediction for Turkey Day. So, the update says we'll give Franklin ingredients to cook with and shows us giving him some pumpkins. Now, here's what we already know about vegetables: 1) Nintendo said in the Halloween update pumpkins would be available year-round from Leif but no one has seen him with pumpkins in November that I've seen, 2) data miners have found other vegetable items in the data like potatoes and carrots and a couple others (although without any info on how they'll be used or even if they're the same type of item as far as I can tell), 3) Leif has a couple little seedling pots on his cart--originally only one had a seedling with the rest being empty but after the Halloween update, two had seedlings and the other two were still empty. So what I think is that vegetables will be like bushes, where Leif will sell one vegetable that's in season and one or two random vegetables that aren't in season. And that's why there are no pumpkins currently: there's no other vegetables to sell. I think Leif will sell pumpkins again with this update because I think Nintendo will introduce other vegetables and a week is enough time for us to be able to grow a couple other things in time to give to Franklin for Turkey Day. (I also think there may be more things for Leif to sell at some point to fill the other little seedling pots.)
I know a lot of people were predicting the return of Brewster and gyroids in this update since Brewster's existence has been confirmed via data miners. I was not predicting Brewster's return with this update. I've now seen at least one reaction video predicting Brewster in the January update; I think that'll be wrong too. Here's my take. So I never thought Brewster would be in this update because adding two holidays plus their special NPCs plus expanding the farming mechanic (if my Leif predictions turn out to be true) plus Brewster and the coffee minigame and collecting gyroids seems like a huge update that's a lot bigger than any of the previous updates. Similarly, I don't think the January update will include Brewster since that'll add Pave and the Festivale holiday. Instead, I think there's a much better time to add Brewster, which is the March/April 2021 update. Nintendo has implied that they have two or three years worth of updates planned for the game, so they can't add too much at once because they're spreading out the updates to keep people interested. They seem to me to want to keep adding exciting stuff for people to keep them playing for a long while. So I think the perfect time to add Brewster will be approximately a year after the game was released. 1) There won't be a holiday update then since Zipper and Bunny Day are already in the game. 2) Day 1 players who don't time travel or visit islands in the other hemisphere will now have completed their critterpedias. So adding Brewster at a year after release will give the Day 1 players something new to collect with the gyroids and is not competing with another special NPC. So yeah, that's my prediction: look to March/April of next year for Brewster and gyroids.
And now, having got all that out of the way, there were so many new items in the trailer. I am so curious about all of them. Are they DIYs? New things I can buy from Timmy and Tommy? Gifts from Franklin or Jingle? Will they be customizable? How will they be customizable? So very many questions. I'll put timestamps for reference to what I'm talking about.
0:45 (the player is delivering a present to a villager): For new stuff here, the player character is wearing Jingle's outfit and the present they're delivering has a wrapping paper I've never seen. My guess is the outfit is given to you by Jingle, like how we got Jack's outfit. I'd say he gives you the clothes and hat when he gives you the task to help him deliver presents. The one note I have about the outfit is that it is not an exact copy of Jingle's. Jingle's coat (at 0:40) has rounded corners (I'm sure that's not the term, but I don't know what is--it's where the two flaps of the coat overlap at the bottom), but your outfit (at 0:42) has an even bottom edge. Yours also has two white buttons whereas Jingle's is all fur-trimmed. So they're similar outfits but not the same. For the wrapping paper, my bet is that it's special Toy Day wrapping paper that only shows when you're delivering gifts for Jingle. You do get to buy toys from Timmy and Tommy in preparation for Toy Day (similarly to how we bought candy in preparation for Halloween, maybe) though, so who knows. I could be completely off on this.
There were also several single items that looked new to me that were shown when showing off the reactions. At 1:09 with the "work out" reaction, there are three little tents in the background. They don't look like they'd be a seasonal- or holiday-related item, so does this mean Nintendo is adding more general items? My guess is the tents are a DIY and can be customized; furniture with fabric can almost always be customized, even if it's something you buy rather than make. And then at 1:11 with the "yoga" reaction, there's a strange rug/mat on the floor. It does not look like any I can find in the game. It reminds me of the sloppy rug with how it's rucked up, but the sloppy rug is 4x4 and blue whereas this is 2x1 and white. My other thoughts were the pirate rug (but that's 3x2 and not that white) or the beach towel. I don't remember the beach towel being that rucked up and I can't see the pillow, but if it's not new it has to be the beach towel.
Edit (the next day): Okay, I've gone to Harv's island and am now convinced that the rug in the "yoga" reaction is just the beach towel with the white customization. You can't see the pillow because it's behind the player's legs, but the bottom of the beach towel is rucked up exactly like how the rug in the trailer is. I forgot that the beach towel doesn't lie flat in my excitement, so my bad on that. </edit>
The "excited" reaction at 1:15 shows a pile of presents. That pile is seen in other places (0:29 and 0:32, with at least one other colorway) but this scene makes it front and center. My guess would be that this is a new DIY, since making a stack of presents seems very like something you build. My excitement is for the different colorway. I have no expectation that this is what'll happen, but I think it would be super cool if you build the pile of presents using a few cardboard boxes and then you customize it using the wrapping paper you can buy from Timmy and Tommy. We've already had items that can be customized using things other than customization kits with the spooky set, and it makes sense to use wrapping paper to make presents look different. The biggest snag that I can see is that there are sixteen different wrapping paper colors, and no item has more than eight colorways (discounting putting Sable's patterns or a custom pattern on something). Possibly it could be something like you need a white, a black, and a gray wrapping paper to make a silver colorway for the presents. The snag there is that Timmy and Tommy only sell two wrapping papers each day and the colors are random so it would be difficult to get all three colors for something that should not be that tricky. It might work if, say, you only needed some combination of three white, black, or gray wrapping papers or if you only needed three wrapping papers and color didn't matter. If Nintendo did use wrapping paper to customize, my guess is that they'd go with the latter option since there's no recipes that use OR functionality.
Then at 1:17 with the "ta-da" reaction, you can barely see an evergreen wreath with a couple ornaments on it behind the "ta-da" bubble. The festive series already has an ornament wreath and it does not look like that. This one very much looks like a holiday or seasonal item. My guess would be DIY again, but I don't know what series it would be a part of. And at 1:18 where the player is running over to the mirror to check the new hairstyles, if you look above the bed, there are four stockings on the wall. This seems like it'd be a bought item, maybe something to go in the seasonal corner of Nook's Cranny. (And on further contemplation, I could potentially see things like the pile of presents, little tent, and wreath in the seasonal corner. If that's what happens, then the only way to get other colorways is to visit other islands but you'll be able to order them afterwards, like how the surfboards were.) The four stockings only take up two spaces horizontally, which makes me think it's one item that's hung similarly to a garland rather than four separate items hung nearby each other. And somehow it being one item makes it seem like something you buy rather than something you make. It's a very formless intuition I have though.
The big moments with lots of new items shown all seem to be Turkey Day things. There's three main sections to the potential Turkey Day items, the stuff outdoors on the plaza during the event with 0:10 showing the tables and 0:24 showing Franklin's station and the stuff indoors at 1:14 when showing off the "here you go" reaction.
For Franklin's station, I'd say the table is exclusive to Franklin, much like the canopy for the bug/fish tournament is exclusive to Flick/C.J. But you can get the bug cage/cooler you see under the canopy as a reward in the tournament, so we may be able to get some of the stuff on Franklin's station somehow. The cutting board on the right looks like the cutting board DIY we already have, just minus the little napkin, and the frypan on the left looks like the frying pan DIY with maybe a different customization. That still leaves the mini gas stoves, big red pot, mixing bowl and spoon, and the various bottles and jars spread across the table. I honestly have no clue whether these are individual items we can acquire somehow or just stuff exclusive to Franklin. My inclination would be we won't be able to acquire these items, but I have no real basis for that beyond my gut feeling.
Back to 0:10 and the tables. The covered dishes are new; I think they'll be just for Turkey Day since they seem to fit neatly in there. The candles and straw centerpiece seem to be one item; they're too close together for me to believe they were placed separately. Since the leaves near them are only on half the table, I'd guess the leaves are also part of the item, making this a 2x1 item. (If the leaves were a pattern on the table, they would cover more of the table.) It's a super cute table decoration, and I hope we can use it to decorate ourselves. What I am the most curious about, however, is the table itself. It looks like the table with cloth that's currently in the game but with a second cloth placed on top of it. Is it really the table with cloth and Nintendo hardcoded an extra table cloth on it for the event? Or are they expanding the customization options for the table with cloth? Is it somehow a new item entirely? The pattern on the top cloth also doesn't seem to be one of the ones Sable gives you. That fact makes me think this is the table with cloth with a special top cloth hardcoded on top of it and we will not be able to do this ourselves, which makes me sad. I want more tables, benches, and chairs!
And the most potential for new items for us is at 1:14, I feel, with the scene inside the player's house. There's a new rug that's so pretty, probably a gift from Franklin. There's a pot in the foreground on top of the already-in-the-game serving cart. I am sure there will be different colorways for the pot, and I could see it either being a bought item or a crafted item. There's a new place setting that I bet is a DIY and can be customized. (Maybe we will get a bunch of DIYs from Franklin? Or our villagers after we give Franklin items to make food?) The chairs and table are also new, and the chair seat cushion and table runner share a scallop pattern. I would be very surprised if the chair cushion is not customizable. If the chair is a DIY, I expect the type of wood to also be customizable, but if it's an item we're given I expect there's just the one wood color. Now for the table, if the pattern on the chair is customizable, then I'd expect the pattern on the table runner to be similarly customizable. But if you look on the back wall, there's a mantle with a table runner that has that same pattern but is a different color. So that implies to me that the table runner color should also be customizable. Can we customize both? There are some items where we can customize two things, for example the wood type and duvet of the wooden simple bed. I can't recall if there's an item with two customizations where both customizations are for cloth, but I don't see why there couldn't be one. I expect the table is part of a set with the chairs, so it'll be bought or crafted same as the chairs. I don't see the wood of the table being customizable though since that'd be three customization options for the table, so maybe the chair wood is not customizable either. And then there's the mantle along the back wall. The mantle has a little leaf garland, a similar table runner as the table, and a little tableau on top with some balloons, a straw piece (similar to the ones on the Turkey Day tables in the plaza but slightly smaller I think), a candle, and a photo on top of a doily. My guess is that this is two items: the mantle and the harvest decoration on top. I say the table runner on the mantle can be customized with a new pattern and color and possibly the garland will change depending on pattern/color. I don't think the garland will change on its own. Everything on top the mantle I say is one 2x1 item. Everything seems too bunched together to piece out into separate 1x1 items, plus the doily being on top of the table runner makes me think it's something separate from the mantle.
I have probably spent wayyyy too long watching and rewatching this trailer, but man. So many exciting things!
I do believe that this is everything new from the new trailer plus the updates on Nintendo's websites. ...I did warn in the cut text it'd be long.
