coprime: two game-obsessed, winning-obsessed nerds (ships that I ship)

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Akimichi Chouji/Nara Shikamaru/Yamanaka Ino
Canon Level: Friends/Teammates

Aw yeah, Ino-Shika-Chou trio. I have said before why I like Chouji and Shikamaru, but for all that I adore them, I have to admit that they're not exactly a pairing with a lot of energy or grand passion. Ino would bring that in spades. I think she's fiercely protective of her teammates, albeit not in the most obvious ways, and of the three of them, she's the one who'd kick their butts and refuse to let them feel sorry for themselves. She'll force them to experience life rather than sit on the sidelines watching it. I do feel like Ino has a bit more energy than either Chouji or Shikamaru would be able to handle on their own, but with the three of them I think they'd be a good balance.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Aburame Shino/Inuzuka Kiba
Canon Level: Teammates

I will admit that I am somewhat predisposed to enjoy pairings from within any of the genin teams because the friends to lovers trope is one of my absolute favorites. But I have a special soft spot for Shino, who's a loner partly due to his generally reserved nature and probably also partially out of self defense because he's a bit weird even for a ninja. I think they'd make a reliable team, on and off the field, switching who took the lead with ease depending on the situation.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Hyuuga Hinata/Hyuuga Neji
Canon Level: Cousins

Sometimes there are pairings that make (general) you examine where the line for squicky vs. non-squicky incest is. Neji and Hinata is one such pairing for me, and I think the line for me here is how Neji and Hinata are introduced. Neji is full of anger and resentment towards Hinata and what she represents, and Neji has no warm, family feelings for her, and that has the case for years at that point. So I think that as Neji matures, there are a lot of directions his feelings for Hinata can go, one of which is him standing by Hinata's side as her steadfast support while she leads their house in a new direction. Hinata has a core of strength that's not obvious now but could grow beautifully as she becomes more sure of herself, and I think having Neji at her side can only help.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai
Canon Level: Friends/Rivals

Gai and Kakashi are just a lot of fun together, mostly because of all Gai's Gai-ness. They've known each other for a long time, and I think Gai understands Kakashi very well, even if Kakashi probably doesn't want to acknowledge that very often. Their rivalry gives Kakashi, who is a by self-imposed choice, a friend and something approaching normal human interaction without making it obvious, and I think that could be a great base for something more between the two of them.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Canon Level: Coworkers

So I feel like Iruka and Kakashi are one of those juggernaut-type pairings that had a lot of potential background and future canon based on the beginning of the show, which left a lot of room for authors to imagine and play with, but then actual canon didn't quite pan out that way. And by then the fact that there wasn't really a lot of canon support or even interaction between these two didn't really matter because the pairing had its own momentum regardless of canon. But they're still a really fun ship! Iruka, who's got a fairly stable life with a lot of big emotions, and Kakashi, who's a pervy enigma with a lot of angsty emotions, are really enjoyable to read about with their contrasts but who work well together because deep down they both deeply care about the people who are important to them and their village.

(This is going to be an entire week of Naruto, by the by, because I also thought up theme weeks when I was loosely planning this whole thing.)

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Haruno Sakura/Rock Lee
Canon Level: One-Sided Crush

So I am all for romance in my reading, but I have a fairly broad definition of what sorts of things are "romantic" that has a lot more to do with the characters in question than what is traditionally thought of as romantic. For example, Chouji offering Shikamaru his last potato chip has a lot more meaning to it that Chouji buying flowers for Shikamaru. Which is my roundabout way of saying that I think Lee and Sakura would have a very traditional sort of romance if Sakura could ever get over Sasuke. They'd be so sweet! I think Sakura would genuinely appreciate Lee's courtship, and Lee would blossom because Sakura's enjoyment.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Gaara/Rock Lee
Canon Level: They've Fought Against and Alongside Each Other

Gaara and Lee are a pairing that, on the outside, shouldn't really work. They're too different. Lee's grand enthusiasm and seeming never-ending optimism and Gaara's ruthless efficiency should have them clashing all the time both philosophically and with how they go about their lives day-to-day. But I think that clash is why they'd work well together. Lee's relentless cheer means he won't give up when things get tough, and Gaara needs someone he can believe in no matter what. For Lee, I think Gaara's intensity would be appealing. So many people don't take Lee seriously, but Gaara would. And their personal philosophies aren't that different. They both care deeply about protecting people; they just have very different ways of showing that desire.

Canon: Naruto
Pairing: Akamichi Chouji/Nara Shikamaru
Canon Level: Friends

Chouji and Shikamaru contain so many tropes I adore, they're perfect for each other. Chouji's easy-going affability and Shikamaru's lazy genius make for such a comfortable atmosphere to read. Their friendship is like a cozy blanket, warm and fuzzy. Shikamaru's ability to see past Chouji's surface and Chouji's absolute faith in his friend are a great base for a romance.

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmmmm, what to ask for. My wish from Day 4, for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles recs that aren't turtlecest or explicit, is definitely still in effect, but what else? Pairing conversion fics, those stories that converted you to an OTP or convinced you that some crack pairing actually totally worked, would be fun. The only example I can think of off-hand at the moment is [livejournal.com profile] maldoror_gw's Diplomatic Relations, but it is a superb example. As far as fandoms go, I'm passingly familiar with a lot of fandoms and am totally willing to read in unfamiliar canons if the fic sounds interesting enough.

I signed up for Shikamaru/Chouji over at [livejournal.com profile] 30_kisses, which I'm excited about. And since I just finished my first kiss, I'm celebrating by making an organizational table. (I really need to find a better way to celebrate....)

Anyway, the table be here )

I have now finished reading the first 255 chapters of Naruto over the holidays. (Okay, I lie. I read the first twenty chapters a month ago. But the 235 others were all read over break.) As one might guess by the quantity and speed with which I consumed the manga, I enjoyed it greatly. Only stopped because that was all I *had*.

My thoughts, they be rambly and slightly incoherent. Cut for spoilers. )

I'm pretty sure I've misspelled some names in there, but I can't quite be bother to look them up. Sorry to anyone who reads my inane babblings and knows Naruto.

Well, Serenity was really, really good. I've seen it twice now, and I'd also like to state that everyone should go see it. Even if you never saw Firefly, they did a really good job making the movie accessible. (My dad, who only ever saw one ep and is notorious for asking questions during movies, followed it just fine and never once got bored.)

Spoilery Serenity thoughts )

Toons! Not particularly spoilery, but it is lengthy. )

One nice thing about being back at school is watching cartoons all Saturday night long with my roommate. I'm really liking Naruto, although Sakura's annoying. (She's too hypocritical for my tastes. Plus, it always annoys me when a character thinks she can change someone else with her love.) Zatch Bell and One Piece both continue to be annoying and slightly disturbing. Futurama, Inu-Yasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Samurai Champloo continue to be cool.

There were two eps of Justice League Unlimited, and I was surprised. I really liked them! I loved what they did with J'onn since it makes sense. Even though I'll miss him, it's better than what would have happened if he didn't take a vacation. Also, Flash hugged him when he left! So cute! (My biggest gripe about JLU is the complete lack of Flash. That one little scene totally made up for the lack in that ep [but not the series].)

And, Teen Titans totally rocked! How much do I love Teen Titans? THIIIIIIS MUCH!!! (Yes, my love really does need three exclamation marks.) I loved the difference between Robin and Mento's styles of leadership, especially since it seemed to highlight how while the Doom Patrol may have raised Beast Boy, the Titans are more of a family. I thought it was weird that they occasionally refered to the Doom Patrol members by name. It's the first time (that I remember) that anyone's had two names given in the show. (Slade goes by his actual name, but he's also never called Deathstroke. So, Slade functions as a codename. [I thought that was his codename when I first watched because I'd never read any comics at that point in time.]) And giving the Doom Patrol names is weird because it'll be off if they never refer to Beast Boy as Gar. But they can't because then he'll be the only Titan to have a name other than their superhero name.

Oh well, I ramble. Am eagerly waiting forward to next Saturday so I can see the end of tonight's ep.

Hee, the roommate and I are now watching Firefly. Mwahahaha, she is my third(ish) convert!
