Canon: Final Fantasy IX
Pairing: Amarant Coral/Freya Crescent
Canon Level: Teammates

I have capital-o Opinions on Freya and the canonical end to her character arc. Suffice it to say that I do not agree with it, and that my preference for Freya with Amarant shares a common cause with my dislike of her with Fratley but isn't the reason for my dislike by itself. But Freya and Amarant were built up by the game! Sparks practically flew the first time they met, and they had that nice scene outside the auction house where Amarant opened up to Freya, and then they worked together to defeat the Fire Shrine. They had an understanding between them, warrior-to-warrior. Amarant respected Freya, probably liked her company and cared for her well-being. Freya got Amarant, something not many other people did, because I think she saw something of herself in him. I really, truly believe they would have been great together.

Canon: Final Fantasy VII
Pairing: Zack Fair/Cloud Strife
Canon Level: Friends

Somewhere about halfway through Final Fantasy VII, I was so thoroughly confused by what in the world was going on with the plot that I decided to go read fic in the hopes of clearing things up. (It certainly wouldn't have been able to make my confusion any worse.) And promptly fell down the Cloud/Zack hole but good. I like Zack's friendliness and general happy-go-lucky attitude, but it's his complete devotion to the people he cares about that really gets to me--and Cloud is definitely one of those people. I feel like it's only natural that Cloud would be drawn Zack's bright spirit. And the thing that makes them work for me is that Cloud has just as much devotion as Zack, only it's a little harder to see at first. I feel like Zack was able to see a smidgen of that (one of the few who did see Cloud's true strengths), was intrigued, and determined that he had to get to know Cloud.

Canon: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer Almasy/Zell Dincht
Canon Level: Antagonists

Oh man, the thing I wanted most after finishing this game was long Seifer redemption fic where he went around the world trying to Make Things Right after what he did and in the process he'd learn to forgive himself and be more mature and maybe also how to make a relationship work, preferably with Zell. I like Zell because he's not afraid to call Seifer on when he's being an asshole but he's ultimately a fair guy. Their fights aren't meanly vicious, and I think that'd still be true post-game. Let them snarl and bicker and tumble with each other, all while building something between them that neither knows about until it smacks them in the face because they're both horrible at emotional maturity.

Canon: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Rinoa Heartilly/Squall Leonhart
Canon Level: Dating

There is something about the immersion you get with video games that gets to me so that I often end up shipping the canon couple despite myself. Rinoa's annoyingly peppy, Squall is trying real hard to earn his Angstiest Teenager Trophy, and yet I think they're super cute together. Rinoa refuses to let Squall wallow in his pessimistic attitude and drags him out of his shell in a way that none of his other friends can manage on their own. She has a core of tenacity that's easy to overlook but which hooks Squall and drags him into her orbit. They act as good counter-balances to each other with different strengths and weaknesses.

Canon: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
Pairing: Adell/Rozalin
Canon Level: In Love

I got really invested in Adell and Rozalin after however many umpty hours my husband spent playing it. They're so different, and I really enjoyed seeing them grow and start to care for each other over the course of the game. Rozalin starts out so sheltered and stuck up and stubborn, but she makes friends and learns how to care about other people with Adell at her side as she finally gets to experience the world at large. And rough-and-tumble Adell's just as stubborn as Rozalin and eventually he stays by her side and protects her because that's where he wants to be, not just because he feels it's his duty. They're both so stubborn and set on disliking each other at the start that it makes the good ending really satisfying.

Canon: Phantasy Star IV
Pairing: Demi/Wren
Canon Level: Colleagues

Yeah, I am not sure where this one came from, but I finished Phantasy Star IV wanting nothing more than for Demi and Wren to settle down together and build robots and/or androids as their substitute children. Demi's adorable and I want good things for her, and I think Wren could be a part of that. I've always seen Wren as someone who's stern and doesn't show emotions easily but who cares deeply about his friends and what's right. I think he'd be protective of her at first, but as time goes on, Demi would mature into herself and Wren would feel comfortable opening up to her as an equal. All while they worked together to fix the environment with their robot/android children. It would be so sweet!

Canon: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Pairing: Eve Belduke/Espella Cantabella
Canon Level: Friends

Childhood friends! Who now need to relearn how to be friends after several bizarre years. Eve, especially, has to relearn how to live a regular life after getting so bitter and angry because of Labyrinthia. Espella is so upbeat and optimistic that I think Eve would be drawn to her.

Canon: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Pairing: Zacharias Barnham/Eve Belduke
Canon Level: Interested in Each Other

The game Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a bit of a mess, in my opinion, both plot- and mechanics-wise, but the characters were interesting. And Zacharias and Eve were especially cute. Zacharias is so serious and dedicated to everything he decides to do and yet is still able to learn and change. Eve, post-game, is nervous and awkward now that she no longer has the defined roles of High Inquisitor and Great Witch dictating her life. She's finally free of obligations and can figure out what she wants in life for herself. A courtship between them would be so sweet as they both bumbled their way through things, trying their hardest but not really knowing what they're doing.

Canon: Star Ocean: The Second Story
Pairing: Celine Jules/Opera Vectra
Canon Level: Friendly

Star Ocean: The Second Story is such a fun game. I normally do not like grinding, but with this game I really enjoyed save scrumming for hours so I could work at leveling up the characters' skills. (Iron Chef minigame is best minigame.) And the characters are all colorful and fun too. My preferred party was Claude, Chisato, Opera, and Celine, so it's probably not too out there that my ship of choice at the end of the game was Celine/Opera. They would be so awesome together! Celine, a treasure hunter with a taste for adeventure, and Opera, a noble lady with a bigass gun. (I did not care one lick about Ernest then, and I still do not care about him one way or another now.) I got the solo endings for Opera, where Opera stands on her balcony alone and wonders how everyone is doing, and Celine, who's off in some ruins hunting for treasure. And really, the obvious solution to Opera's dilemma was, in my opinion, clearly to join Celine in her adventures.

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Nina/Rei
Canon Level: Friendly

I promise this is the end of the Nina train I have been on for the past few days. But this entire scene is Nina going, "Look who I brought home, Mom and Dad! He's a weretiger thief who's at least a decade older than me! Isn't he great?" And Rei just goes with it despite not really knowing what exactly he's doing, and I am just like, "Yes, rebel, Nina, rebel! You should be able to go for that tiger man if you want to!" It's almost like fake dating and made me believe Nina and Rei fake dating would be great. It'd start out with Nina wanting to scandalize her parents and Rei wanting to get some respectability for a start at a new life. And then Nina would realize how much of a softie Rei is beneath his fearsome exterior and how much he just wants a family to take care of. Rei would get to know all of Nina's facets and realize that here is someone willing to fight for him because he is deserving of that. Until everything finally came to a head (probably because of Nina's parents confronting them and forcing the issue), and the real truth comes out.

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Momo/Nina
Canon Level: Friends

I think they'd be cute together! Momo is very smart and curious but also a bit spacey at times. I think she'd forget to treat Nina like the princess she is, and I think Nina would enjoy that. Watching Momo experiment could be relaxing for Nina despite the explosions because it would be a place where she doesn't have any duties or responsibilities or politics to take care of. I'm not sure if Momo would understand why Nina finds her lab to be a respite, but she would enjoy the company.

Canon: Breath of Fire III
Pairing: Nina/Ryu
Canon Level: Interested in Each Other

I will probably ship every version of Nina and Ryu, but right now the only Breath of Fire's I'm familiar with are I and III. And while this is still Nina and Ryu, they're a different Nina and Ryu than the first game. This Nina has more sense and spends a good portion of the game chafing at the restraints put on her by her role as a princess and trying to figure out who she is beyond that role, and this Ryu gets to have his entire life be a big philosophical question on self-determination and what it means to live and exist. Nina is a steadfast friend of Ryu's, standing by and believing in him wholeheartedly since the beginning. But she's also not Ryu's sidekick, as she spends a lot of time also figuring out who she is. I like them because they clearly care for each other and they've both questioned who they are and what their place in the world is. I think post-game, Wyndia could serve as a good home for Ryu. He'd still wander, I think, exploring the world and making new friends and visiting old ones, but Wyndia and Nina would be a good place for him to rest and recoup. And sometimes Nina would go with him! Because even if she's comfortable with herself and her role leading Wyndia, I bet she would still sometimes long for an adventure and go with Ryu to see what sort of trouble they could find.

Canon: Breath of Fire
Pairing: Nina/Ryu
Canon Level: Together

Breath of Fire I is a great game, and Nina is by far my favorite character. She's a magic princess with wings who has more can-do-it attitude than practicality. Ryu is a good match for her because he's just as determined. Ryu can help Nina when she gets in over her head (which is probably a lot less once she's able to transform) or needs backup, and Nina can help Ryu from getting caught up in his own head. I think Nina's energy is what Ryu needs in his life, and their support for each other can only help enable them to do great things.

The BF and I had a couple people over last weekend for a board game day, which is always a ton of fun. And also means we get to play a bunch of new-to-us games!

We also played a couple games of Codenames, which is still a lot of fun.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Hello! I am so excited you offered to write something for me in a fandom that I love! And I am sure I will love whatever you write. I've included some more information in this letter--some general likes/dislikes and some fandom-related babblings--if you want them, but don't feel obligated to use anything in this letter if you don't want to. I think the best stories are the ones the writer was excited about, so if already know what you want to write, go for it! I will love whatever you write, promise. Also, some sections are noticeably longer than others. I really truly am equally excited for all my requests otherwise I would not have requested them. That being said....

Generalities )

The Book of Life )

Final Fantasy IV )

Gunstar Heroes )

Rosario + Vampire )

And having said all that, my very first paragraph still stands: the best story I could get is one you are excited to write, whatever that story is. I promise I will love it.

I attended Gen Con this past weekend along with the BF and had a lot of fun! We also played several new-to-me games, of course. (But not too many because I can get scheduling overload easily.)

Six Games Behind the Cut )

So those are my thoughts on the games I played at Gen Con this year: several really fun games plus one big dud.

Part 1 is now done and clocks in at just over 20k. I've gone over it slightly to change things to make more sense, but I'm afraid to look at it too much in case I find it's utterly horrible and nonsensical. I don't think it is, but I also acknowledge that I am completely lacking in objectivity towards this thing.

Anywho, onto Part 2! Which will probably be even longer but needs to get written because I adore two of the scenes I want in it, one of which may end up being the last scene of this part. So far I've got about a thousand words.

(And if I end up not writing Part 2 for some reason, there will probably be a very long, very angry rant about how much I hate the "shovel talk". Haaaaaaate so goddamned much.)

Oh dear god, this thing is nearing 20k words, and I can't figure out how to end it. And even when I do, this is just part one of three, and parts two and three will probably be even longer. I just hope I have the stamina to complete it all because I love this thing so danged much, but it refuses to ever end....

I finished playing Final Fantasy VII at the beginning of the month, and it's sort of taken over my brain. In ways I didn't expect! Like, Cloud is really not the typical type of character I go for. He's way more angsty and guilt-ridden. (Zack is very much the type of character I generally go for, but he's barely in the game.) But I keep watching AMVs going "Cloud's hair is so pretty caked in blood" which what? When has that ever been something I have gone for in fictional characters?

And! I came out of the game pretty firmly shipping Aerith/Zack/Cloud. I am not used to OT3s, much less ones where spoilers. ) And there's something deliciously painful about most fic featuring these three that I am eating up with a spoon, but there is also a reason why I tend to prefer the fluffy domestic end of the spectrum.

It is all very conflicting and confusing!

Which is probably what has led me to write 7,500 words of fix-it fic/not-fic that is somehow not even close to being finished. (It just keeps growing.) And I'm really enjoying what I'm writing so I kind of want to post it if I finish it, but I am also soooo far from objective about it. I am sure it is in English and not completely unreadable grammatically (and has paragraph breaks!), and that is about it. So that is also very confusing and conflicting.

I feel like I need more exclamation points to properly express my feelings about these developments: !!!!!!!

Also: ??!!?!!
