coprime: an awesome lady stepping out of a boat (Erythrina stricta)

My friends and I went and saw Across the Universe in the theaters tonight, and I am so glad I got to see it. I want to see it again because we missed the first ten minutes due to all the people wanting to see American Gangster.

But yes, the colors! And the music! And the dancing! I was very impressed by the actors actually singing the songs. There was also a surprise Eddie Izzard, who got one of the more bizarre musical numbers. (There was a surprise Bono too, but he only surprised me because I didn't realize it was him until my friends informed me of this fact after the movie.) All very fantastic, and all the songs flowed very naturally in the story. Which I was a bit surprised by since all the songs predate the movie, and I'd thought that at least some of them would feel forced. I even liked the movie's version of "Hey Jude," which is my least favorite Beatles song.

From what I can tell, the movie did a good job with historical accuracy except for one detail, and I can't figure out if it's a bit of history I don't know or if the movie used a subtitute name. Because one of the characters joins a political protest group called the SDR, and I didn't quite catch the name at first and assumed it was the SDS.

...Now that I think about it, it's probably a substitute name because the movie also had Timothy Leary advocating "Turn on, tune in, drop out" except he had a different name. And I remember a lot more of my high school US history class than I thought I did.
